Phoenix takes a full part in the extensive road running programme within the county and beyond and has a fine record of championship and league successes in recent years.
Throughout the year some 17 or 18 road races, from 5K to 20M, are designated ‘Grand Prix’ and are competed for by all the main county clubs. We host the Phoenix Races in Preston Park on the second weekend in November as part of this series. You can score points as an individual and for the inter-club competition based on your eight best races which optimally should include a couple of 10M+ runs. For further details see Sussex Grand Prix
Keep an eye on the fixtures list since these events are often linked in with the above races.
The county championship is held at Horsham at Easter and Phoenix men are reigning champions in the Senior and over 60 categories. We go on to compete in the South of England 12-stage (6-stage for women) at Milton Keynes and 6-stage at Aldershot.
This is an extensive programme of more informal races, from 5K to 10K spread throughout the year. Many of us have joined fun run clubs as second claim members (particularly Southwick Strollers and Portslade Hedgehoppers) although everyone is welcome for just a £2 entry fee (50p for juniors). http://www.westsussexfunrunleague.org.uk
Although there are age limits for races over 10k (usually16 or 17) many of the races mentioned here either have age-group races (like the Phoenix Races) or a ‘junior’ race over a shorter distance.
